What is BMI?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a numerical value of your weight in relation to your height. It is used as a simple screening tool to categorize weight status.

Formula: BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]²

International BMI Categories:

  • Underweight: < 18.5
  • Normal weight: 18.5 – 24.9
  • Overweight: 25.0 – 29.9
  • Obese: ≥ 30.0

Asian BMI Categories:

  • Underweight: < 18.5
  • Normal weight: 18.5 – 23.9
  • Overweight: 24.0 – 27.9
  • Obese: ≥ 28.0

Limitations:

BMI does not directly measure body fat. It may misclassify muscular individuals as overweight or obese, and may underestimate fat in those with low muscle mass. Other factors such as age, sex, ethnicity, and muscle-to-fat ratio should also be considered.
