What is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage is the proportion of your body made up of fat. Unlike BMI, which only considers weight and height, body fat percentage provides a better picture of your overall body composition by distinguishing fat from lean mass.
Why Body Fat Percentage Is More Accurate Than BMI
While BMI is a general health indicator, it doesn’t account for muscle mass. For example, athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat. Body fat percentage helps identify whether excess weight comes from fat or muscle.
Recommended Body Fat Ranges
- Men: 6–24% (ideal: 10–20%)
- Women: 14–31% (ideal: 18–28%)
Common Measurement Methods
Body fat can be measured using methods like bioelectrical impedance (BIA scales), calipers, DEXA scans, or circumference-based formulas. This calculator uses the U.S. Navy Method, which estimates body fat based on your neck, waist, hip (for women), and height.
Formula Used
Men:
Body Fat % = 495 / (1.0324 – 0.19077 × log10(waist – neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) – 450
Women:
Body Fat % = 495 / (1.29579 – 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip – neck) + 0.22100 × log10(height)) – 450
